"My first thoughts tonight are for the safety of people - but my heart also breaks for Glasgow's beloved @GSofA".

Fears were mounting last night that the Glasgow School of Art will be beyond fix after a devastating fire ripped through the Mackintosh building for a second time in four years.

Nearby homes have been evacuated as a precaution. Obviously all of us hope the building can be saved but I think it's too early to draw any conclusions from that.

The building was supposed to reopen next year after the renovations.

More than 120 firefighters fought to contain a huge fire that ripped through one of the world's top art schools in the Scottish city of Glasgow on Friday (Jun 15) night. No casualties were reported.

"There is a sense of loss not just amongst the firefighters but I am sure the citizens of Glasgow". The Mackintosh library was being restored in a project estimated to cost up to £35m.

About 50 crew remained at the scene almost 12 hours later, working to extinguish "a few pockets of fire", the fire service said.

"This is a very sad morning in the city of Glasgow", she said.

By morning, the Grade-A listed structure could be seen gutted against the morning sun, with stone pillars and destroyed timber framing among the only remaining elements of the iconic, pioneering Arts and Crafts-style structure designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1896.

An exhibition by graduating students took place at the nearby McLellan Galleries and the school of art's Reid Building. It came near the end of a multimillion pound (dollar) project to restore the building to its former glory after a 2014 fire.

Robertson said he had been in the building a few weeks ago to look at how the restoration was progressing.

A fire has devastated the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland for the second time in four years.

Paul Sweeney, shadow Scotland minister, said the Mackintosh Building was the "most architecturally important building" in the city.

The Mackintosh building is named after its architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Scotland's most influential designer.

The UK government "stands ready to help, financially or otherwise", he added.
