The concession means MPs could be given power to prevent Britain leaving the European Union without a deal.
But the former Chancellor Kenneth Clarke has urged pro-EU rebels to hold their nerve, arguing that if they succeeded they would strengthen Mrs May's hand against the Brexit hardliners in the Cabinet.
May's government is divided between Brexit-backing ministers such as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson who support a clean break with the European Union, and those such as Treasury chief Philip Hammond who want to keep closely aligned to the bloc, Britain's biggest trading partner.
Britain is due to leave on March 29, 2019, and the bloc is frustrated with what it sees as a lack of firm proposals from the U.K about future relations.
But the latest manoeuvre by a minority government that has been forced to compromise with parliament anxious some lawmakers who feared it would hand the European Union an incentive to withhold any agreement on an exit deal to force a softer Brexit.
