Israeli officials were said to be confident Tuesday that US President Donald Trump meant to stand by his comments referring to a possible American strike in Syria, in response to another use of chemical weaponry by Assad's forces against his own citizens.

Assad said in an interview broadcast on Thursday that the state would recover the swathe of northern and eastern Syria controlled by the SDF, either through negotiations or force.

Earlier in the day, Syrian President Bashar Assad told Russian media that Washington had "lost its cards" in Syria and called on the Americans to leave.

Assad said a confrontation between Russian Federation and U.S. forces over Syria had been narrowly avoided.

"The two sides outlined the main contours of a roadmap for their further cooperation in ensuring security and stability in Manbij", the statement said, giving no further detail. There has been no confirmation of such a deal, however, from Russia, Israel or Iran. Trump has also blamed his predecessor for supporting Syrian rebels trying to oust Assad after a 2011 uprising, saying in 2015 that "Assad may be bad, but we have absolutely no idea who these people are that we're arming".

They said that in return, Russian police will make sure cease fire is maintained and will manage the area. Israel in recent months ramped up its strikes on alleged Hezbollah and Iranian positions and weapons depots inside Syria, sparking fears of a regional war.

Hariri pushed back against Assad's comments, stressing that Russian Federation and Iran had been fighting on behalf of Assad in the Syrian war, helping him retake considerable territory from rebels and Islamic groups.

More recently, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated this week that Russian Federation believes that Iranian forces should be kept at a distance from the Syria-Israel border in the aftermath of the Syrian civil war.

After President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, US and Israel apparently see a need to adapt the December agreement to the new reality.

Assad said the government had "started now opening doors for negotiations" with the SDF.

These include the SDF-held parts of the north and east, and chunks of territory held by rebel forces in the northwest and southwest. "People will not accept foreigners in this region anymore".

Take a cursory look at the bleeding mass of blood and population displacement that is Syria today, and you could be forgiven for thinking that this is the country where diplomacy goes to die.

Tensions between the US and Syria have ratcheted up during the Trump administration over its response to the country's seven-year civil war.

Hariri's remarks come amid intense Israeli diplomatic and military efforts against what Tel Aviv claims is a growing Iranian military presence in Syria, including a campaign of air strikes against suspected Iranian bases.
