Trump's attack, the latest in a series of criticisms of USA companies, was an about-face for the president, who hosted company officials and gleaming Harley-Davidson bikes on the White House lawn shortly after his inauguration.

Trump has dismissed the notion that his tariffs are to blame for Harley-Davidson's decision and has accused the company of using the duties as a false pretense for moving production out of the U.S.

"Harley-Davidson believes the tremendous cost increase, if passed on to its dealers and retail customers, would have an immediate and lasting detrimental impact to its business in the region, reducing customer access to Harley-Davidson products and negatively impacting the sustainability of its dealers' businesses", the company said in a public filing.

Harley-Davidson is suffering the fate of many of those who tangle with the president: Twitter trolls. Trump then threatened the company "will be taxed like never before" if they follow through with the move.

Rep. Jim Renacci aligned himself with President Donald Trump, criticizing Harley-Davidson's decision to move some jobs overseas. Mr. Trump knows nothing about economics and even less about trade.

"Our decision to move some of our operations is 100% based on President Trumps tariffs". The President went on to tell Harley-Davidson that, despite the proposed tariffs raising the price of every raw material that goes into a Harley, that the Motor Company would not be affected by them.

He also said both sides agreed to connect the Belt and Road initiative to the EU's development strategies. As tensions continue to escalate, trade experts warn there are fewer options to resolve the dispute.

"I'm just telling you it's false", he said.

Trump tweeted Tuesday that Harley-Davidson had already announced it was closing a Kansas City plant and moving those jobs to Thailand.

Harley-Davidson executives met with Trump at the White House past year after Trump canceled a visit to the company's headquarters in Milwaukee because protests had been planned.

Rising trade tensions and retaliatory tariffs could pose serious risks for Harley-Davidson, rating agency Moody's said on Tuesday.

He said the company has been working with Twitter to see if the tweets could be removed and to figure out where they originated. "And I think the people who ride Harleys aren't happy with Harley-Davidson, and I wouldn't be either".

"It's unfortunate that such a strong Wisconsin company like Harley-Davidson has to bear the brunt of this trade dispute", Sensenbrenner said.
