A auto chase between border patrol vehicles and an SUV carrying 14 people resulted in a auto crash in Big Wells, Texas on Sunday.

Four people believed to be undocumented immigrants were pronounced dead on the scene with a fifth pronounced dead after being transported to a San Antonio hospital. Boyd tells San Antonio television station WOAI a driver and one passenger are believed to be USA citizens.

Boyd told WOAI a wall needs to be build because illegal immigration is "a real problem" in the area.

The crash occurred about noon on Sunday in Big Wells Texas.

Some injured were taken by helicopter to San Antonio, about 90 miles (144.83 kilometres) northeast.

One of the four taken to the San Antonio hospital later died, the department said.

He said his deputies are often involved in chases pursuing people suspected of smuggling undocumented immigrants and drugs. He said one passenger was taken into custody.

"From what we can tell the vehicle ran off the road and caught gravel, and then tried to re-correct and then caused the vehicle to turn over several times", Mr Boyd told CNN.
