Palestinian militants bombarded southern Israel with dozens of rockets and mortar shells Tuesday, while Israeli warplanes struck targets throughout the Gaza Strip in the largest flare-up of violence between the sides since a 2014 war.

Israel has long said it will not tolerate such attacks, and its warplanes hit more than 30 targets belonging to armed groups, including a cross-border tunnel under construction, the military said.

Tel Aviv has waged three wars on the coastal enclave since 2008, including the 2014 offensive, which left more than 2,200 Palestinians dead. There were no reports of Palestinian casualties in the Israeli strikes. "The resistance factions will abide by it as long as the Occupation does the same", he added. The media must cease its mendacious coverage blaming Israel for Gaza violence, which rewards Hamas for its barbaric tactics.

A spokesman for the Islamic Jihad Dawood Shihab, said that the ceasefire with Israel will be based upon the understandings of the 2014 agreement.

"We must prepare to occupy Gaza as a part of efforts to eliminate Hamas rule", Shaked said, according to a translation by Palestinian-Israeli news website Arab48.

"Israel will make [Hamas] pay for all fire against Israel", Katz told Israeli public radio.

Sirens sounded throughout much of the day in Israel warning of about 70 incoming rockets and shells, some intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome defense system.

Due to the barrage of rockets being fired at Israel, the United States has called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council of the United Nations. Explosions shook the Palestinian enclave and smoke rose from areas hit. They attacked in the morning as Israeli children were walking to school.

"They have the ability, the control and the power to escalate or to deescalate the situation, to rein in the Palestinian's and their own extremist factions in Hamas or to escalate the situation", said military spokesman Jonathan Conricus.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed on Tuesday to "respond to these attacks powerfully".

Itamar Yaar, former deputy head of Israel's National Security Council, said it was unlikely that the latest escalation would lead to another war, mainly because neither side is interested in such a confrontation.

Three Israeli soldiers were wounded by projectiles fired from Gaza, one moderately and two lightly, said the army.

This follows weeks of Palestinian mass demonstrations near the fence with border.

Most believe this round of violence may be at an end.
