Israeli aircraft struck two Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday night, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, Palestinian security sources in the coastal territory said.

It said the explosive device had been hidden inside a pair of fence cutters.

Israel has fought three wars with Hamas since the Islamist militant group took control of Gaza in 2007 following Palestinian elections.

The Israeli army revealed that the device was detonated.

The soldiers arrived at the scene moments later and opened fire at the individuals, who in turn fled back to the Palestinian side of the fence.

"The IDF views with great severity the daily attempts of the Hamas terrorist organization to strike at security infrastructure in Israeli territory while threatening the security of both residents and soldiers", read the IDF statement.

Israeli naval vessels have made it hard for Gaza's fishermen to fish beyond a certain point, usually set at six nautical miles or about 11km and have opened fire on Palestinians ships in the past.

The incident occurred in the morning in a continuation of the violent Hamas-led "March of Return" protests that began March 30 at the security fence separating Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Home to almost two million Palestinians, the Gaza Strip has been reeling under a crippling Israeli blockade since 2006 when Palestinian resistance group Hamas was voted to power in a parliamentary election.

Israeli authorities are also constructing an underground barrier beneath the Gaza-Israel boundary to stop Hamas from digging tunnels into Israeli territory.
