Time lapse from Hawaii observatory shows eruptions at Kilauea

Blackout not expected in Hawaii even if lava reaches power plant, officials say Kilauea Volcano Lava Flow: Wells Capped at Power Plant that Locals Say Desecrates Goddess of Fire

Kilauea's eruption on the Big Island began on May 3 at a distance of 24 kilometers from the plant.

Gov. David Ige said Tuesday that authorities are monitoring the flow of lava and the threat to the plant.

Hawaii County spokeswoman Janet Snyder tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that the warehouse adjacent to the plant was destroyed late Monday night. Lava has burned and buried more than a dozen homes in the community, and 1,700 people have fled.

Since the start of the eruption, lava flows have forced evacuations, closed a geothermal plant that supplies 25 percent of the island's power and created a noxious plume of "laze" when it began flowing into the ocean.

Production wells at the Puna Geothermal plant, which harnesses heat and steam from the earth's core to spin turbines to generate power, have been plugged to prevent toxic gases from seeping out.

"Fissures near Puna Geothermal Venture are active and producing lava slowly flowing onto the property", Civil Defense said in a statement. A flammable gas called pentane is used as part of the process, though officials earlier this month removed 50,000 gallons (190,000 liters) of the gas from the plant to reduce the chance of explosions.

Seven scientific instruments aboard five NASA and partner satellites helped answer this question and have provided a wealth of other important data - the composition and size of newly emitted volcanic plumes, for example, and how, exactly, the movement of molten rock underground is deforming the ground on the Big Island.

Kilauea began erupting lava in a residential neighbourhood on May 3. The air, especially in the southern part of the island, is increasingly risky.

Kilauea rumbled back to life on May 3 as it began extruding lava and sulphur dioxide emissions through a series of fissures, marking the latest phase of an eruption cycle that has continued almost non-stop for 35 years.

Geologists say Kilauea has since entered a more violent phase, in which larger volumes of molten rock are oozing from the ground and traveling farther than before. Even the smoke rising from the lava appears to take on a red tinge as it plumes into the sky.

Kilauea's eruption, which has already produced almost two dozen lava-spewing fissures, entered a more violent phase at the weekend, producing larger volumes of molten rock from fissures.

Lava from a nearby, new volcanic vent entered, then stalled, on the 815-acre (330-hectare) property where the Puna Geothermal Venture wells occupy about 40 acres (16 hectares).
