White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Saturday that the "pre-advance team for Singapore will leave as scheduled in order to prepare should the summit take place".

South Korea on Saturday welcomed the renewed prospect of a summit between the United States and North Korea after President Trump cancelled talks with Kim Jong Un only to suggest they might still take place.

Kim, in a dispatch issued by the North's state-run news service earlier Sunday, "expressed his fixed will" on a North Korea-U.S. summit.

Mr Trump's cancellation of the summit blindsided treaty ally South Korea, which had brokered the remarkable detente between Washington and Pyongyang.

The weekend talks were the latest twist in a week of diplomatic ups and downs over the prospects for an unprecedented U.S.

Trump withdrew from a planned June 12 Singapore summit with Kim last Thursday, then quickly announced that the meeting could get back on track.

"We find it fortunate that the embers of the North Korea-US talks are reignited". Previous talks between USA and North Korean officials - including two meetings between Kim and Pompeo - have failed to yield clarity on the denuclearization issue.

Moon acknowledged Pyongyang and Washington may have differing expectations of what denuclearisation means and he urged both sides to hold working-level talks to resolve their differences.

In his letter, Trump warned Kim of the United States' greater nuclear might, reminiscent of his tweet past year asserting that he had a "much bigger" nuclear button than Kim.While the Trump administration had insisted on North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of its nuclear program, Pyongyang had always couched its language in terms of denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was deposed and killed by NATO-backed militants in 2011 after halting his nascent nuclear programme.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in have met for the second time in a month to discuss peace commitments they reached in their first summit and Kim's potential meeting with President Donald Trump.

Russian President Vladimir Putin chimed in from St. Petersburg, saying that "if you don't behave aggressively and if you don't corner North Korea, the result that we need will be achieved faster than many would think, and at less cost". U.S. officials said the most likely document would provide a framework for future negotiations, without going into great detail about what North Korea might be willing to give up or what steps the United States would take in exchange.

Trump dismissed the so-called Libya model. The goal of the preliminary meetings includes drafting a communiqué for both leaders to approve at their historic meeting, the United States official said. "We're going to see what happens". Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters diplomats were "still at work" and said Trump had just sent a note out on the summit, which could be back on "if our diplomats can pull it off".

Hours after a surprise meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas aimed at shoring up diplomacy, President Trump seemed to keep hope alive for a summit with Kim Jong Un to go ahead as planned on June 12 in Singapore.
