NFL Owners Terrified Of Trump

NFL national anthem rules NFL national anthem rules
Isaac Mcdaniel | 25 May, 2018, 04:49

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said afterward that the objective is to "have people to be respectful of the national anthem".

The NFL ruled that players must "stand and show respect for the flag and the anthem" if they're on the field when the anthem is player.

Really, there are two questions here: Should NFL players sit or kneel during the anthem to protest against racial discrimination?

"Well, I think that's good", Trump said of the policy shift during an appearance on "Fox & Friends" Thursday morning.

Trump has derided players and team owners for the kneeling protests on multiple occasions, sparking a debate as to whether the protests were disrespectful of the US military or an expression of First Amendment rights.

Under the new league policy, teams can be fined an unspecified sum if players protest on the field. Luther Strange "Wouldn't you love to see one of these National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a b-- off the field right now, he's fired.' You know, some owner's going to do that".

Bears coach Matt Nagy said after practice Wednesday that the team will discuss the issue as a group at some point in the future. "I brought it out".

"I don't think people should be staying in the locker rooms, but still I think it's good."
The player said at the time, in the wake of multiple police shootings of unarmed black men: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color". Trump suggested that allowing players to stay in the locker rooms might have even been too lenient.

New York Jets chairman Christopher Johnson told Newsday that he voted for the new policy because "I felt I had to support it from a membership standpoint". Do it how they did, I believe like 10 years ago, 15 years ago, players didn't even come out for the anthem.

"I never want to put restrictions on the speech of our players", he said.

On Twitter, a player for the Philadelphia Eagles - which won the Super Bowl last February - accused the league of only caring about its finances. "This is not patriotism".

If players kneel for the anthem, the team will be fined by the league.

Both are Republicans, although it's unclear whether their objections to the kneeling are rooted in their "partisan political affiliation", given that Mr. Kaepernick hasn't framed his protest as anti-Republican and isn't known as a member of the Democratic Party or any other political party.
