He has been charged with rape, criminal sex conduct act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct against two women, the New York Police Department said.

In February, Scotland Yard received an allegation that Weinstein sexually assaulted a woman in Westminster in the mid-1990s, bringing the total number of women who have reported Weinstein to British police to 10.

The rape charge relates to a woman who has not spoken publicly or been identified, the official said. "We intend to move very quickly to dismiss these charges", Ben Brafman said.

Merseyside Police say they received an allegation of sexual assault in the London area in the 1980s, and referred it to Scotland Yard.

"Assuming", he added, "we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case".

Weinstein has previously "unequivocally denied" all allegations. "Nothing about today's proceedings changes Mr. Weinstein's position", defense attorney Benjamin Brafman said.

Standing alongside his celebrated defense attorney, Weinstein looked glum and appeared not to speak during the fleeting court appearance, at which he agreed to post bail at $1 million cash and was ordered fitted with a Global Positioning System monitoring device. With a throng of cameras on hand, the once-powerhouse producer found himself at the center of a spectacle he didn't control. Argento posted two messages to her social media pages: "What took you so long, Harvey? and "Harvey Weinstein isn't smiling now", both accompanied by screenshots of Weinstein heading into the courtroom".

Asked "What can you say?" he mildly shook his head and softly said "No".

He stepped out of a black SUV, clutching several books, among them what appeared to be the Rodgers and Hammerstein biography "Something Wonderful" and a book on director Elia Kazan, before walking into the police station. Later, in a courthouse booking area, he complained he felt faint and his handcuffs were too tight.

In an earlier interview with ABC, McGowan said, in reference to the justice she and his other victims feel, "we were sentenced to a prison, we were sentenced to years of it before anybody believed us".

He's accused of confining a woman in a Manhattan hotel room and raping her in 2013, according to a court complaint.

The official said Weinstein would be charged with committing a criminal sex act in a 2004 encounter with Lucia Evans, a then-aspiring actress, who has said that the Hollywood mogul forced her to perform oral sex on him in his office.

"Today Harvey Weinstein will take his first step on his inevitable descent to hell".

Weinstein stands accused by more than 70 women of sexual misconduct, including rape, with some of the accusations going back decades.

His attorney told reporters outside court that Weinstein meant to plead not guilty to all four charges announced Friday.

Weinstein is also reportedly the subject of a federal investigation looking into whether he arranged the travel of women across state lines for the purposes of having sex with them.

Weinstein's lawyer is one of America's most celebrated criminal defense attorneys.

Lawrence hits back, calling him a "predator" after Weinstein's lawyers used favourable quotes about him from the Hollywood stars. Assistant D.A. and Special Counsel Joan Illuzzi stated in substance at the arraignment that Weinstein would be fitted with a monitoring device, which enables him to be tracked 24/7; if he wishes to travel beyond NY or CT, he must seek prior approval from the People and the Court; and he surrendered his passport, and may not apply for a new or replacement passport.

The charges stem from incidents with two separate women, the NYPD said in a statement, and were the result of a joint investigation between police and the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

He has strenuously denied all accusations of sexual assault.

They include TV hosts Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose, comedian Louis CK, Democratic Senator Al Franken, chef Mario Batali, casino magnate Steve Wynn and, most recently, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

But on Friday, it was Weinstein in the spotlight. We stand with the courageous women who came forward against Harvey Weinstein.
