The Census Bureau will release additional population estimates by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin for the nation, states, and counties on June 21. Although it is still the third largest city in the country counting 2.7 million residents, the AP estimates it lost about 3,800 of them since its last count.

In Florida, both Sumter County (34 percent) and Osceola County (31 percent) grew at more robust rates. It added 2,965 people since 2010, bringing its population to an estimated 62,353, according to the census, which ranks it as the 597th-largest city in the nation. McKinney was No. 9 with a 4.8 percent increase, and Flower Mound was No. 11 with a 4.3 percent increase. New Braunfels - located between San Antonio and Austin - ranked as the country's second-fastest-growing city.

Phoenix grew by 24,036 residents between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017, the report said.

All other Central Oregon cities have also increased in population and two reached new milestones. That's a healthy 2.3 percent growth rate, which was enough to help the Mid-Columbia hold its ranking as the 165th largest metro area in the USA in an earlier round of numbers released in March.

Then, in 2015-16, the city was again among the top 15 fastest-growing cities in the nation at 12th place with an estimated 68,918 residents and a growth rate of 4.5 percent. It gained 13,470 people for a total 2017 population of 177,286.

The Chicago region is expected the reverse the recent population loss and grow through 2030, according to Alden Loury, director of research at the Metropolitan Planning Council. Rounding out the top five states in percent gain were Utah (10.7 percent), Texas (9.6 percent), Idaho (8.1 percent) and South Dakota (8.0 percent).

Molly Cromwell, a demographer with the Census Bureau, told KTAR News 92.3 FM in March that several factors contributed to the county's population growth.

"Our median housing average is a little over $200,000 and our median income is between $80,000 and $90,000", he said, saving many who are moving into the area a big chunk of change.

The census figures are based on estimates that are later adjusted as more data are analyzed.

Madras grew to an estimated 6,839 residents, while Culver topped the 1,500 mark, with an estimated population of 1,508 residents, and Metolius grew by 22 people, to a population estimate of 773.
