The fighters then climbed an adjacent tall building that was under construction, according to a local police commander, and continued their attack from there.

At least five people were killed and 16 wounded in the Wednesday's attacks, said health ministry spokesman Wahidullah Majroh, adding that the casualty toll was likely to rise.

Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said the first suicide bomber attacked a station in the western part of Kabul, killing at least two police.

The second attack occurred at the entrance to the police station in the centre of the Afghan capital: at least two explosions.

At least six injured were shifted to hospital by rescue teams after the attacks. No group has claimed responsibility for the incidents.

Second explosion happened in Shahr-e-Naw area, in Kabul's PD10 area, reports said.

The attacks came as a strong 6.2-magnitude quake rocked Afghanistan, shaking buildings in Kabul where people were already on edge.

Gunfire was also reported during the "cleanup operation" following the blast. No organisation has claimed the responsibility of the blasts.

As the man approached the center, in a park in the Shar-e Naw commercial district, police opened fire, setting off the explosives in his suicide vest, Hashmat Stanekzai, spokesman for Kabul police said. He says the Taliban also captured several villages nearby.

He said another four other civilians were killed and 15 wounded in a gun battle in the same district, in which two insurgents were killed and seven wounded.

Earlier this year the top USA commander in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, said protecting Kabul would be the "main effort" after repeated major attacks, including one in January that killed more than 100 people.

Interior Minister Wais Barmak said that "special forces were trying to bring the situation under control".

After an easing of violence in Kabul in February and March, Taliban and IS militants have stepped up attacks in the city in recent weeks.

A senior official at the Indian embassy confirmed that one blast took place outside a travel company's office and many security guards were injured.
