Trump attempts to cloud timing of potential Syria strike

G20 Nations Hold Hamburg Summit Trump tweeted that Syria and ally Russia should"get ready for missiles

Theresa May received unanimous cabinet backing for United Kingdom military action against Syrian regime targets after senior ministers were briefed by Sir Mark Sedwill, the national security adviser, on the intelligence case pointing to President Assad's culpability for the Douma attack.

But that doesn't mean that is something Trump is willing bet his presidency on, which could result in a direct military clash with Russian Federation. "We're looking very, very seriously, very closely at the whole situation", he told reporters.

Since Saturday, when images of ashen toddlers struggling for breath emerged from Douma - the main city in the Eastern Ghouta enclave near Damascus that has been a crucible of revolt against Bashar Al-Assad's regime - there has been a sustained military buildup in the eastern Mediterranean.

Should the President follow through on his warnings of an attack, two US Navy destroyers armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles are in position and ready to be called into action, among other assets including jets and submarines.

Russia's United Nations ambassador warned the priority in Syria was to avert US-led strikes that could lead to a confrontation between the world's two preeminent nuclear powers. They also said the U.S.in conjunction with other countries has compiled intelligence, including images, that indicates the Assad regime carried out last weekend's fatal attack.

USA officials have refused to rule out direct military engagement with Russian Federation, with the White House saying "all options are on the table".

Moscow on Thursday night warned against any United States move that could trigger a conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals.

Syria and Russia have denied using poisonous gas in Douma on April 7, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov saying that Moscow had evidence that the attack in Douma was staged.

That may prove too little, too late.

Putin, Netanyahu discuss Israeli airstrikes on Syria
Israeli army officials said Israel would overthrow the Assad government if Iran attacked Israel through Syria . Netanyahu fears that a US retreat from the conflict will allow Iran to expand its influence.

The council has already failed to agree on a response to the attack in three votes and has been deadlocked throughout the Syrian civil war.

Speaking on TF1 television, Macron said that France would not tolerate "regimes that think everything is permitted".

Prime Minister Theresa May held an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss joining mooted strikes by the United States and allies, with ministers agreeing "on the need to take action", her Downing Street office said in a statement.

May has said "all indications" point to Syrian responsibility for the attack.

In April past year Trump ordered Tomahawk strikes on the Shayrat Airbase in response to a similar chemical weapons attack on rebel-held Khan Sheikhun.

"So striking at Syria is not a good solution, but doing nothing after the use of chemical weapons is even worse", he said.

The same officials say Syria has continued to produce or procure chlorine, which also has industrial and agricultural uses.

The Assad regime is known to have stocks of the nerve agent sarin, and has previously used a mixture of chlorine and sarin in attacks, say US officials. "People started shouting in the streets, 'Chemicals!"
