Overnight improvements and an impressive final Q3 effort from Hamilton put him just 0.179s shy of Vettel's pole time meaning the reigning champion will start Sunday's race from the front-row.

The Ferrari driver - who led the race comfortably until a safety auto period allowed Bottas's Mercedes to make a pitstop and emerge still ahead - locked up trying to retake the lead on a restart with four laps to go, ultimately dropping to fourth.

The late safety auto was deployed as a result of Ricciardo slamming into the back of Red Bull team-mate Verstappen with 11 laps remaining, the duo having battled fiercely all race and already made contact once.

"These tyres are done", complained Hamilton, who pitted to switch to "softs" after 22 laps, rejoining third behind Bottas, but ahead of Verstappen.

As for the Red Bulls, Ricciardo seemed the faster after they finally got some temperature in their tyres, and by lap 35 had passed Verstappen. Ricciardo opted to pit first but a slow out-lap meant Verstappen got back ahead.

Hamilton's race took a turn for the worse on lap 22 when he locked up both front tyres on the run down to Turn 1. Max Verstappen seized the initiative, overtaking Daniel Ricciardo with an aggressive move into Turn 2 after the first Safety Car restart.

Indeed Hamilton ran off the road twice following uncharacteristic mistakes and spent parts of the race seemingly at odds with his team as he struggled to keep up with Vettel.

Now the F1 season moves on to its first European race of the season with the Spanish Grand Prix on the 11-13 May weekend. Sergio Perez ("Force India") - +4,0244. Hamilton and Raikkonen did the same, setting up a sprint race to the finish between the top four drivers. Sadly for Red Bull, it ended with both drivers out of the race.

He lost out in a similar situation in China and will have been expecting to sew up his first win of the season when the racing restarted with just four laps to go.

Hamilton's early pit stop gave him good warm tyres for the closing stages, even though those final laps were interrupted by the safety vehicle again. Bottas led Vettel, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Perez, Grosjean, Sainz, Leclerc, Stroll and Alonso behind the SC.

After the final safety vehicle spell, the Ferrari made one last effort to reclaim the lead - and locked up, veering wide and allowing Lewis Hamilton into P2.

Hamilton's lack of a pace advantage on fresh, but harder, rubber allowed Vettel to stay out until lap 30 before taking on softs, but Bottas ran even longer. He was late to the podium celebrations because he went to speak with Bottas, who "deserved" the win.

At one stage he even called for the event to be abandoned as a truck precariously dealt with Romain Grosjean's stricken Haas after the Frenchman crashed out under the safety vehicle. Ricciardo's second retirement this season leaves him fifth, 33 points off the lead.
