But a new study suggests that even if you have a genetic risk for heart disease, there's a simple way to combat it: Exercise.

It was revealed that high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness were associated with a 49 per cent lower risk for coronary heart disease and a 60 per cent lower risk for atrial fibrillation compared to study participants with low cardiorespiratory fitness.

Although a link between physical activity and heart health has already been found in previous studies, little has been known about the effect of exercise in those who had a family history of cardiovascular disease. "All were associated with lower risk of disease in the future", Dr Ingelsson noted.

About one in four deaths in the United States are due to heart disease. Those people who were more active showed a decrease of nearly 50 percent of major heart incidents compared to people who were not active in their lifestyle.

In one of the largest observational studies on fitness and heart disease, researchers examined data collected from almost a half-million people in the UK Biobank database.

In addition to the previously known advantages of physical exercise, the new findings disclosed online by the American Heart Association via its Circulation journal on April 9, have shown that fitness also aids those people, who are having a genetic pre-disposition to heart disease. the study researchers have claimed this after analyzing the Biobank database of the half millions of people from the UK.

When they entered the study, none of the participants had any evidence of heart disease.

For participants deemed at intermediate genetic risk for cardiovascular diseases, those with the strongest grips were 36 percent less likely to develop coronary heart disease and had a 46 percent reduction in their risk for atrial fibrillation compared with study participants who had the same genetic risk and the weakest grips.

During follow-up, there were 20,914 reported cardiovascular events, which included heart attacks, strokes, atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Most notably, it is an observational study and therefore can't prove a causal connection between exercise and a lower risk of heart disease for genetically at-risk people.

When producing this study, age, gender, ethnicity, region, other illnesses, smoking, BMI and use of lipid medications were all taken into consideration.

Each person in the study was categorized by their risk factors as either: high risk, moderate risk or low risk.

Researchers found across the board that higher levels of fitness and physical activity were associated with lower levels of several negative cardiovascular outcomes, including coronary artery disease, stroke and atrial fibrillation.

Conclusions- Fitness and physical activity demonstrated inverse associations with incident cardiovascular disease in the general population, as well as in individuals with elevated genetic risk for these diseases.
