Reps. Greg Walden and Frank Pallone, Jr., the chair and ranking member of the committee, respectively, said in a statement that the hearing "will be an important opportunity to shed light on critical consumer data privacy issues and help all Americans better understand what happens to their personal information online".

"Zuckerberg's willingness to testify before the committee, and we look forward to him answering our questions on April 11th", they said.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is set to testify before a USA congressional committee over the alleged hijacking of millions of user's data. Zuckerberg is also scheduled to hold a conference call with reporters Wednesday afternoon about the company's response to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Mr Zuckerberg was also invited to appear before a United Kingdom parliamentary inquiry over the alleged abuse of Facebook users' data, but refused to attend. Years earlier, Cambridge Analytica improperly appeared to access the names, "likes" and other personal information from at least 30 million Facebook users, according to Christopher Wylie, a former employee turned whistleblower.

The number of users hit by the Cambridge Analytica data leak is getting bigger: Facebook announced on Wednesday that 87 million users unknowingly had their information accessed by Cambridge Analytica in 2014 - a jump from the 50 million users originally believed to have been hit. The company also faces continued scrutiny over its failure to prevent exploitation of its network by Russians using fake news and fake accounts.

After word of the breach surfaced last month, Canada's privacy commissioner launched an investigation to determine whether Facebook respected the federal privacy law covering private companies.

Facebook and Zuckerberg have since launched an apology tour that has included numerous interviews and full-page newspaper ads.

Lower-level Facebook executives have briefed staff behind closed doors but lawmakers have complained they couldn't answer all of their questions.
