On Wednesday evening, PREPA announced that more than 51,000 customers have electric service, though Puerto Rico has more than 1 million households. It also said via Twitter that it's working to restore service through the island.

Justo González, an executive deputy director of the power authority, said Wednesday that the blackout was caused by a private contractor when a bulldozer downed a transmission line while trying to remove a collapsed tower.

Some have been without power even longer, hit when Hurricane Irma brushed past Puerto Rico's northeast coast as a Category 5 storm on September 7, leaving 1 million customers without power, including university student Jonathan Rodriguez and his family.

M - After seven months and close to $2.5 billion, nearly everybody in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico had their lights back on - until a freak accident on Wednesday plunged the entire island once again into darkness, NYTimesreported. Since the hurricane tore from the island's southeast corner though the central mountains and out the northwest coast six months ago, several communities near Cayey remain without power.

China's trade surplus with USA rises
Trade between the two nations remained strong in the first quarter, with bilateral exchanges rising 13 percent to $142 billion. Looming large over everything is the risk that trade tensions with the U.S. morph into a protracted, widening conflict.

The blackout was caused by the failure of a 230-kilovolt line between the oil-fired Aguirre generating complex in Salinas and AES Corp.'s coal-fired power plant in Guayama, according to the utility.

"This is the second power failure that has affected the people of Puerto Rico in less than a week", he said in the statement. "It has caused 3.4 billion lost customer-hours in Puerto Rico - more than in the rest of the U.S. over the past five years".

Boutique family-owned inns and major hotels in resort regions including Culebra, Cabo Rojo and historic San Juan, were highlighted by "crowds enjoying the beaches, diverse attractions and nightlife", said PRTC officials, indicative of "travelers' growing trust in Puerto Rico's readiness".

Maria, the worst storm to hit the island in 90 years, devastated Puerto Rico's electrical grid, and thousands were still without power at the time of Wednesday's blackout. Mammoth's subsidiary, Cobra Acquisitions, was tasked with removing the fallen tower to prevent interference with another transmission tower's structural support wires.

It is the first island-wide power outage since the storm. He said Tesla already did similar work on smaller islands.
