World Tuberculosis Day raises awareness about deadliest infectious disease

TB is one of the top 10 causes of death in the world.

In the year 2016, over 1 million children were diagnosed with TB and 250,000 children died of the disease.

Today TB is a disease of poverty and inequality, disproportionately impacting low- and middle-income countries and the most marginalized and vulnerable people within communities. Over 95 per cent of cases and deaths are recorded from developing countries.

Nigeria ranks 4th in global TB infections and the highest in Africa.

The symptoms of TB include cough, fever, night sweats and weight loss. "A TB-free world is a wonderful service to humanity", PM Modi tweeted. There were 4,268 persons living with HIV at the end of 2016, and there are 225-250 new HIV cases every year. He urged members of the public to work together to combat TB. Fortunately, a large majority of the infected people have latent infection, which means they are not yet ill with the disease and can not transmit the disease. The complete course of TB treatment is minimum 6 months. We have been battling TB for more than 30 years, and are one of the biggest non-governmental treatment providers in the world.

Scientific estimates suggest India has almost 28 lakh TB patients, out of which only 18 lakhs are accounted for either in the government programme or as known private sector cases.
