What to expect at the Academy Awards

Oscars: All the Best Picture winners you can watch on Netflix Who needs the Academy Awards? We're presenting our own In a Perfect World Oscars (to those that shoulda been nominated)
Melody Ballard | 05 March, 2018, 00:06

This year, experts see a tossup between "The Shape of Water", which has the most nominations and has won important precursor awards, and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", which also won bellwether awards.

After last year's mess at the end of the Academy Awards ceremony, when "La La Land" was erroneously called up to the stage instead of the more deserving, and actual victor, "Moonlight" and the audience was left hanging for a couple of the most awkward moments in live network TV history, it seems like the word everyone is avoiding for tonight's ceremony is "surprise".

"Countdown To Oscars, Live!" Will "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" continue its sweep of wins from the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and British Academy (BAFTA) ceremonies?

"Blade Runner 2049" will win a long-awaited Oscar for cinematographer Roger Deakins, who is 0 for 13, and Best Visual Effects.

Check out the full list of nominees for the 2018 Oscars. The Academy Awards, which will also be available for streaming on abc.com, are coming a week later this year because of the Olympics.

In India, the 2018 Oscars will be simulcast on Star Movies, Star Movies HD, and Star Movies Select HD, just as they were past year. It will probably be a squeaker - though by how much, we will nearly certainly never know, because the academy does not release vote tallies.

Oscar-winner Lupita N'yongo, one of the stars of what is arguably the biggest film now in theaters, "Black Panther", will also present.

Who will win: All evidence suggests that Three Billboards will take home the gold.

Alexa Loses Her Voice in Widespread Outage
It would ideally have an understanding of Japanese culture as well and would incorporate that knowledge into its translations. If you're traveling and unsure of how to ask for a table at a restaurant, Amazon wants Alexa to have your back.

She adds the bets placed also help determine how the entire night will shape up for the winners and losers. But more than redemption is on the line Sunday for last year's embarrassing best-picture flub - the fiasco known as Envelope Gate.

"Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird") is the fifth woman in history nominated for best director" and the first to land the nod for a directorial debut. The Producers Guild of America and Directors Guild both named "The Shape of Water" as the best picture and so will I. But, this is a new world we are in, and if a year ago proved anything, it is that we can't predict exclusively on past wins. ABC, which televises the Oscars, will offer a livestream on its website, abc.com, and via the ABC app for various mobile and smart-TV platforms. It's been one of the best received films of 2017 and the screenplay had a lot to do with that. The Oscars livestream, or what Facebook and ABC are calling "The Oscars: All Access", will be on both the Academy's page on Facebook Watch and ABC's Facebook page, as well as on Oscar.com and ABCNews.com.

Daniel Day-Lewis reported that "Phantom Thread" is his final film, making voters pay extra attention to his performance.

Who will win: Frances McDormand definitely deserves it above the other performers. Also, Timothee Chalamet is revered as a real revelation from "Call Me By Your Name". However, I am predicting an upset (after all, there has to be one, right?) and saying Peele will win for his script for "Get Out". If there was an upset, I could see Sorkin taking it. His role as a racist, alcoholic sheriff in Three Billboards was absorbing.

Another film set in the early days of WWII, "Darkest Hour", will win Academy Awards for leading man Gary Oldman and the makeup and hairstyling team that transformed him into Winston Churchill.

When it comes to best supporting actor, my personal pick is "The Florida Project's" Willem Dafoe as the flawed but sympathetic Bobby, who manages a motel where longtime tenants are families in economic distress.

Who will win: The smart money is on Allison Janney, as she was simply sensational in I, Tonya. A must-win for her surely?
