"We are getting as much extra water into our network as we can and sincerely apologize to all our customers who are now without water or who have low pressure", said Thames Water in a press release.

Thousands of households have been told to "use as little water as possible" across London after extreme weather caused burst pipes.

Overnight the company has found and fixed leaks and bursts across its 9,000 miles of water mains, and has taken staff off normal duties to concentrate all efforts on the task, as well as getting bottled water out to those areas which need it.

"When water freezes within a pipe it expands, putting more pressure on the pipes and joints, often causing pipes to split or joints to pull apart, and then when it thaws the water will start to leak out".

A number of water companies appear to have fallen well short on their forward planning and the quality of support and communication they've been providing, leaving some customers high and dry.

Thousands of properties across the United Kingdom are still without water after a rapid thaw caused pipes to burst.

London's mayor Sadiq Khan said it was "unacceptable" that thousands across the capital were without water. Others offered to help vulnerable neighbours.

"Water is an essential part of life".

On Twitter, angry customers contacted their providers to complain about the cut off supply and call for further information.

She said she had travelled to her family's house to shower and had been helped by friends who delivered bottled water, as most nearby shops had sold out.

"We sincerely apologise to all those who are now without water or experiencing low pressure".

In a statement, the company said: "We've seen an increase in leaks and bursts on our network, which we are urgently dealing with as fast as we possibly can".

London's water collection points are located at Hampstead No 1 Pond Car Park in North London, and the Homebase on Woodgate Drive, Streatham Vale.
