She said Saturday's event was meant to back up the students leading the call for addressing gun violence, especially as organizers have put on large rallies in communities across the country, including a national walkout March 14 that many Fargo-Moorhead students participated in.

The rally in the nation's capital was organized by students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Everytown for Gun Safety.

The protest was inspired by the students who survived the Parkland, Florida school shooting, but it became a reunion for those who witnessed a York County school shooting 15 years ago.

A fake Facebook page caused confusion over the time of the Vancouver march, but organizers expected a good turnout Saturday morning.

I was hopeful that Parkland would spark people to take action, but I also knew the road ahead would be hard.

Sevan Apollo, a 34-year-old political activist who is helping Oakland students organize their 10 a.m. rally near City Hall, said the gun issue is personal for him.

"We want all voices heard", Robinson said. Nurses are joining the marches in Parkland and Sarasota, Fl., Washington D.C., Austin, Houston, and San Antonio, Tex., Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, Calif.
