All five passengers were unable to unbuckle their seatbelts on time.

Sunday's crash killed all five passengers. It went down about 7 p.m.in the water near New York's mayoral residence.

The death toll from the helicopter crash in the East River in New York City has risen to five, local officials said on Monday.

Sen. Charles Schumer called on the FAA to issue an emergency order to force Liberty to cease until their safety record and the circumstances of the crash are fully investigated.

One witness said she watched the crash take place from the window of her apartment and thought immediately that someone inside the helicopter would not live. He was one amongst those who died in the crash.

Hill moved to the city a few months ago to work as the director of operations at sightseeing company SightSy. Andrew Vidales, a teacher at Bishop Lunch High School in Dallas says, "When he became a firefighter, he was actually studying to be a paramedic with the fire department, so truly a joyful moment when we went to his graduation".

The cause of the crash has not been officially determined.

The pilot was heard on an emergency radio transmission saying there was an engine failure.

"The pilot freed himself, was taken by one of our fire boats ashore and was out on an ambulance", Nigro added. Business Insider confirmed that journalist Trevor Cadigan had died in the crash as well.

Brian McDaniel, a fire rescue officer who lived in Dallas, was in New York City visiting his friend Trevor Cadigan.

The pilot, who was the only survivor, is identified as 33-year-old Richard Vance of Danbury, Connecticut, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

The Coast Guard said, "Five people have been recovered by New York City Police Department and the New York City Fire Department divers and their conditions are now unknown". Owner Liberty Helicopters is referring all inquiries to investigators. The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched a team on Monday.

A private tugboat was the first vessel on scene.

Pennsylvania-based photojournalist Eric Adams told Vertical that the accident flight was operated on behalf of FlyNYON, a company that offers doors-off helicopter photo flights to professional photographers as well as amateurs who just "want to snap a signature shoe selfie" on their iPhone, according to the company's website. That person was apparently the pilot.

EERIE video footage taken from inside the cockpit of the helicopter that crashed into the East River on Sunday shows some of the final minutes of the passengers - with one giving a thumb's up to the camera.
