Larry Page-Backed Company Tests Its New Flying Taxi in New Zealand

Larry Page-backed air taxi start-up could beat Uber to the punch Larry Page aims for air taxis in New Zealand

Alphabet chief executive Larry Page has been putting his vast wealth into a number of projects, including a flying taxi start-up now testing in New Zealand.

The world's first commercial autonomous flying taxi service is hitting the runway in New Zealand.

The vehicle, has been under development for eight years, and it can take off and land vertically, much like a helicopter.

"We are offering a pollution free, emission free vehicle that flies dependably, we think this is the logical next step in the evolution of transportation", Zephyr chief executive Fred Reid said.

No matter what you call it, electric-powered, autonomous aircraft are starting tests in New Zealand, with the aim of carrying passengers in three years. It also includes a parachute that deploys if Cora needs to launch without its fans. It can go 60 miles on a charge, at heights of up to 3,000 feet and speeds of 110 miles per hour.

The company is testing a new kind of fully electric, self-piloting flying taxi, which is a completely different project from the one seen a year ago in a viral video of a single-pilot recreational aircraft, which was being tested over water. According to the video, the Cora is fully automated and fully electric, and requires no piloting skills to operate. "We saw Cora's potential as a sustainable, efficient and transformative technology that can enrich people's lives, not only in New Zealand, but ultimately the whole world", enthused Dr Peter Crabtree of New Zealand's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

However, it looked more like a recreational plaything than a flying vehicle, suitable only for flying above water and seating the pilot in an open top cabin exposed to the elements. The craft, with a wingspan of 36 feet, can carry two people.

Larry Page is far from the only person working toward a flying taxi. We had designed an air taxi, affectionately named Cora, that could take off like a helicopter and transition to flying like a plane. The fact sheet mentions that Cora has an experimental permit with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and New Zealand regulators, but only that the company is looking forward to sharing Cora with the New Zealand public.
