Emergency department visits for opioid overdoses rose 30 percent in the US from July 2016 to September 2017, new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show.

IL is one of the hardest hit states, with a almost 66 percent increase in suspected opioid overdose visits to the emergency room previous year.

"We have an emergency on our hands", says acting CDC Director Anne Schuchat.

However, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island are among states showing a decrease in such visits, according to the CDC data. It also reports that toxicology screens show a leveling off of opioid-related overdose deaths where prescription drugs were present, and drop in the number of Schedule II opioid prescriptions dispensed.

This fast-moving epidemic affects all ages, genders and states and is still increasing across the USA, she said.

The greatest increases were noted in states in the Midwest region, including Wisconsin (109%), IL (66%), in (35%), OH (28%), and Missouri (21%). The highest increases in rates were seen in large central metropolitan areas. North Carolina saw a 31 percent spike during the same time period. "It does not respect state or county lines and is still increasing in every region in the United States". Consistent with the program report, it indicates that the Midwest (70%) is the most burdened region.

Furthermore, overdoses increased 40.3 percent in the West, 21.3 percent in the Northeast, 20.2 percent in the Southwest, as well as 14 percent in the Southeast. Men reported an increase of 30%, and women reported an increase of 24%.

The rate rose most in the Midwest - 70 percent, including a 65 percent hike in IL. "However, if the person is seen in the ED, we are presented with an opportunity to take steps toward preventing a repeat overdose, ideally linking an individual to care and potentially preventing an overdose death". They can serve as important links for follow up for opioid use disorder. "This data sends a wake up call about the need to improve what happens when patients leave the emergency department".
