In a letter sent Friday, the Texas Department of State Health Services says a person with the mumps could have spread the viral illness at the National Cheerleaders Association All-Star National Championship, held February 23 through February 25 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

A person at the National Cheerleaders Association All-Star National Championship had mumps, officials learned.

More than 23,000 athletes and 2,600 coaches participated in the competition from February 23 to 25 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, according to the organization's website.

Van Deusen said that the patient had gone from another state and that, since the opposition, there have been no reports in Texas of individuals building up the mumps regarding the case. Symptoms include a swollen face, fever, aches, and loss of appetite. The time from being infected with the virus to developing symptoms can be as long as 25 days but is typically 14 to 18 days.

The chance for rain and snow will return overnight
Lows Thursday night will fall back into the upper 30s before we start warming up into the weekend. In fact, the meteorological department had issued as many as 39 alerts during the last 24 hours.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said mumps can be spread through coughing, sneezing or talking, sharing items such as cups or eating utensils, or touching objects or surfaces with unwashed hands that are then touched by others.

Mumps are a viral illness that are highly contagious, but have a preventative vaccine. However, many people do not have any symptoms at all. Infected people without symptoms may still be able to transmit the virus.

"To put it in perspective, there's 27,000 cheerleaders there and there's one case", Moffatt said, noting the media was making a bigger deal of the issue than it actually was, as mumps is contracted through the exchange of saliva. Adults who have not had two doses of MMR vaccine can receive the vaccine. The TDSHS said the best way to protect against mumps is to get the vaccine.
