Japan's Finance Ministry falsified documents linked to the controversial sale of public land to an ultra-nationalistic school at which Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's wife Akie was honorary principal, a government insider said Monday.

Japan's Nikkei share average rose to a 1.5 week high on Monday helped by tech shares, but early gains were trimmed as a suspected cronyism scandal dampened sentiment.

"The Cabinet won't resign en masse". "Now the USA is back to goldilocks at least for now, the tariffs are less severe, and Kim and Trump are to meet", said Shane Oliver, Sydney-based chief economist at AMP.

Aso is vital to the stability of his administration and key to his bid for a third term as LDP president in a September party election, which would pave the way for him to be Japan's longest-serving prime minister. "Let's put an end to moves that submit politics to private interests".

A finance ministry official said that 14 items had been altered in the documents after February previous year - when the scandal broke - at the instruction of the ministry's financial division to match testimony in parliament.

Until now... because as the Japanese press reported over the weekend, the Moritomo scandal involving PM Abe's connections with the operators of the right-leaning school implicated in fraud are again roiling markets in Japan. A reference to Nippon Kaigi, a prominent right-wing group of which Abe is a member, was also deleted.

Although market reaction to the Abe scandal has so far been limited, market players say more signs of trouble for the government will likely dent expectations that he will win his third term as the head of the ruling party and thus prime minister later this year and continue his aggressive stimulus.

Malmstroem said she told Lighthizer that "the European Union must be excluded" from tariffs because it is a close US ally. Trudeau also took Canada's case to US cable channels on Monday with appearances on MSNBC and CNN.

Opposition parties have called for Aso, who doubles as deputy premier and is key to Abe's re-election hopes, to resign.

The report also showed that Finance Ministry officials had removed the names of several Liberal Democratic lawmakers from the land sale documents.

"It has become clear that there was a cover-up and falsification", opposition Democratic Party leader Yuichiro Tamaki told reporters.

"At the very least, it seems that Aso's chances of surviving as finance minister are diminishing rapidly", wrote Tobias Harris, vice-president of consultancy Teneo Intelligence, in an email.

National Tax Agency chief Nobuhisa Sagawa, who was formally responsible for the land sale, was forced to quit on Friday amid growing criticism for allegedly making false parliamentary remarks on the matter. "It is inconceivable that the bureaucrats on the spot had such authority (to alter the documents)", said LDP lawmaker Shigeru Ishiba, who has made no secret of his desire to challenge Mr Abe in the party race.

The conservative Yomiuri newspaper and public broadcaster NHK both reported declines in support ratings for Abe's Cabinet in polls released Monday.
