In his meeting with Foreign Minister Le Drian, Zarif also said Iran's military power is for deterrence.

"The Europe should completely fulfill its commitments under the deal and at the same time put pressure on the U.S. to remain committed to it".

France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian arrived in Tehran early Monday for talks on the 2015 nuclear deal and Iran's role in the Syrian conflict.

As far as this project is concerned, on the day that North Korea claimed it had successfully tested an ICBM capable of reaching the US, Iran announced it was bolstering ties with Pyongyang, which leads to speculation that such a move could bring Iran closer to its goal of acquiring a missile that could reach American shores.

US President Donald Trump has been a harsh critic of what he calls the agreement's "disastrous flaws".

After his talks, he was due to inaugurate a new exhibition with works from the Louvre Museum in Tehran. "If the JCPOA were to fail, it would be a great loss for nuclear verification and for multilateralism", Amano said in a speech to a quarterly meeting of the agency's Board of Governors in Vienna.

However, Zarif noted that the nuclear deal, internationally known as JCPOA, is a multilateral agreement and its fate can not be subjected to the whims of Washington.

Apart from the first 25 minutes, most of Monday's hearing was closed to the public while the first accuser gave evidence. Even if she decides the evidence is not sufficient to proceed, public prosecutors can still move to take Pell to trial.

The deal, which doesn't cover Iran's missile program, requires the removal of anti-Iran sanctions in exchange for Iran stopping its military nuclear program.

Last year's $5 billion gas exploration deal with French energy giant Total was the biggest in Iran since the nuclear accord, and showed French firms were willing to stand up to pressure from Washington.

On the eve of the French foreign minister's visit to Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, held a phone conversation on Sunday. "Do we tell France how it should defend itself?" he told the semi-official ISNA news agency.

The French government has also raised concerns over Iran's ballistic missile research.

'The condition for negotiating Iran's missiles is the destruction of the nuclear weapons and long-range missiles of the United States and Europe, ' Iranian Armed Forces spokesman Masoud Jazayeri was quoted by the state news agency IRNA as saying.

Le Drian will also be pushing in his talks to have Tehran put pressure on the Syrian regime, a key ally, to end its devastating assault on the rebel enclave of Eastern Ghouta near Damascus.

A second French diplomat said:"While our concerns aren't directly linked to the nuclear deal, it's important we make progress on these other subjects because otherwise, Trump risks killing the deal".
