The special prosecutor investigating how Michigan State University handled complaints about Nassar, who has been sentenced to prison for sexually abusing female gymnasts, is also expect to give an update on his investigation on Tuesday.

Police have arrested William Strampel, the former Michigan State University dean who was Larry Nassar's boss, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.

Dr. Strampel, 70 years old, was listed as an inmate at the Ingham County, Mich., jail on Monday night.

The Michigan Attorney General's Office is scheduled to hold a news conference Tuesday afternoon, at which special prosecutor William Forsyth will provide an update on his investigation into how Nassar could have sexually abused girls and young women for almost 20 years without the school intervening.

A news conference is scheduled for noon Tuesday.

"Strampel was the dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, which includes the sports medicine clinic, until he announced a leave of absence for medical reasons in December".

Strampel announced a leave of absence for medical reasons in December previous year. Nassar is serving a 60-year sentence for his federal crimes and was sentenced to up to 175 years in state prison for the sexual assault crimes.

The Huffington Post talked with a spokesperson from Michigan State, who said MSU would not speak on behalf of Strampel, but said that John Engler, MSU's interim president, began the process of terminating Strampel's employment in February. Nassar was cleared of policy violations then, in part, based on the opinions of four medical experts who all worked for the university and had close ties to Nassar. During that time, MSU allowed Nassar to see patients.

Among the women who have accused Nassar of sexual assault are Olympic gold medalists Aly Raisman, Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas.

In September of 2016 when Rachael Denhollander became the first woman to publicly accuse Nassar of sexual assault by telling her story to The Indianapolis Star, reporter Tim Evans emailed Nassar, telling him that he had to ask him some questions. The MSU Police Department led the investigations. In letting Nassar resume seeing patients, he also said any skin-to-skin contact should be minimal and needed to be explained in detail.Nassar was sacked in 2016 for violating the rule.

CNN is attempting to reach police, prosecutors and representatives of Strampel for comment.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Strampel told a group of medical school students in 2016 that he did not believe the accusations against Nassar. "And we're seeing that right now in the news with this Nassar stuff", Strampel reportedly said in a 2016 meeting, a written account of which was obtained by the Journal.

Numerous sexual assault charges related to abuses at MSU, and several for abuses that occurred after the close of the Title IX investigation.

"Good luck. I am on your side."
"This is just the first step in restoring trust in Michigan State". Strampel is also a co-defendant in dozens of civil lawsuits related to Nassar's abuse. Strampel's attorney did not immediately reply to a request for comment Monday evening, and a call to Strampel's home in nearby DeWitt, Michigan, was not returned.
