While those who smoke regular cigarettes had the highest levels, the study said e-cigarettes also pose a significant risk, in part because they are often promoted as being safer despite containing numerous same toxic chemicals.
Adolescents who smoke e-cigarettes are exposed to significant levels of potentially cancer-causing chemicals also found in tobacco cigarettes, even when the e-cigarettes do not contain nicotine, according to a study by UC San Francisco researchers.
Lead author Mark L. Rubinstein, M.D., a professor of pediatrics at UCSF, said in a press release, "Teenagers need to be warned that the vapor produced by e-cigarettes is not harmless water vapor, but actually contains some of the same toxic chemicals found in smoke from traditional cigarettes".
Levels of toxic organic compounds were up to three times higher on average in the e-cigarette users compared with the controls.

The research paper explains that vehicle costs included estimate insurance, gas, depreciation, and fuel expenses for operation. Existing surveys also tend to focus on hourly rates rather than per-mile rates; nearly none of them look at driver costs.
In conclusion, the e-cigarettes present the same carcinogenic chemicals as the regular cigarettes, therefore they are not at all a safer or healthier alternative to classic smoking.
"It is indicated in our results that among youth cigarette experimenters, those who have also used e-cigarettes are more likely to progress to current established smoking than those who tried cigarettes alone", Chaffee and colleagues wrote.
Community education specialist for Shasta County's tobacco program Manuel Meza says they're well aware of the dangers of vaping.
Propylene oxide and crotonaldeyde are probable carcinogens, the EPA says, while acrylamide's role in causing cancer is more controversial. Despite massive gains in cutting cigarette use among young adults over the past few decades, e-cigarette use was the most common tobaccoproduct among US middle- and high-schoolers between 2014 and 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Messaging to teenagers should include warnings about the potential risk from toxic exposure to carcinogenic compounds generated by these products".
Additionally, Dr Rubinstein said the chemicals used to keep e-cigarette solutions in their liquid form, propylene glycol and glycerin, are safe at room temperature but toxic when heated to the temperatures required for vaporization.
In fact that information is part of the presentations they give to teens at local high schools.
