Betsy DeVos Struggles to Defend School Choice in '60 Minutes' Interview

An interview that United States Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos sat down for with "60 Minutes" journalist Lesley Stahl aired on Sunday - and it was a trainwreck, critics say.

DeVos' "60 Minutes" appearance was widely panned, with CNN contributor Ana Navarro saying she "had not seen a TV interview so cringe-inducing, since Sarah Palin saw Russian Federation from her back yard" and U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., saying that if President Donald Trump wants to "meet someone who has an actual IQ problem", he should look to DeVos. We understand that DeVos believes that Historically Black Colleges and Universities "were real pioneers when it comes to school choice". She then admitted she has not "intentionally" visited any underperforming schools in her home state.

The moves come during a national gun control debate revived by survivors of last month's massacre at a Florida school, where 14 students and three staff were gunned down by a man with a semi-automatic rifle.

White House officials watched the interview, along with media appearances DeVos made on Monday morning, with dismay, two sources familiar with their reaction told CNN.

The article, based upon an analysis by the Michigan Association of Public School Academies, which represents the charter school sector, shows that charter school students performed twice as well in reading and math as their counterparts in traditional public schools.

According to a CBS This Morning tweet, a Department of Education spokeswoman also responded to the public criticism, saying DeVos is "quite aware" that the state of MI needs to improve for its students.

STAHL: Now, has that happened in MI?

DeVos, who famously explained the need for armed classrooms was due to the potential threat of grizzly bears, responded by saying arming teachers should be "an option for states and communities to consider" while admitting she couldn't imagine her first-grade teacher, Mrs. Zorhoff, ever having a gun "or being trained in that way".

Lesley Stahl: No, but your argument that if you take funds away that the schools will get better, is not working in MI where you had a huge impact and influence over the direction of the school system here.

See video below for an excerpt dealing specifically with MI schools. It was her disastrous theory of education that has already wrecked MI schools.

In a "60 Minutes" interview, DeVos said that she had not visited any underperforming schools during her tenure as secretary.

But credit to my team, they never capitulated", he said. "They're a top side, there's no two ways about it", he said. Stoke, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone and a point from safety with just eight games left of the season.

Malmstroem said she told Lighthizer that "the European Union must be excluded" from tariffs because it is a close US ally. Trudeau also took Canada's case to US cable channels on Monday with appearances on MSNBC and CNN.

DeVos tweeted Monday afternoon: "Here's what we shared with @60Minutes, which of course they didn't show you: MI, like much of the nation, isn't doing well enough to prepare students".

They found that the literature provided some support for the argument that charter schools improve public school performance and "almost none" for the opposite hypothesis.

"Maybe I should. Yes".

Of course, DeVos knows that Michigan's not doing well.

"I'm not so sure exactly".

"The reforms are helping, but there's so much more to do", tweeted Ms. DeVos.

"You're not going to solve the problem if you don't acknowledge the problem", says Pratt Dawsey.

Um, judging by this interview, DeVos is not misunderstood.

"Betsy DeVos is clearly unqualified to be in charge of such an important responsibility-the future of our kids". Neither the Congressman nor the Department of Education could be reached for comment.

According to the Washington Post, Throughout the interview, Stahl asked pointed questions to Devos.
