American Emily Sweeney crashed in her final run at the 2018 Winter Olympics, knocking her out of the competition.

Sweeney received medical attention immediately after the crash, but walked away on her own.

"I'm fine", Sweeney said as she got into an ambulance.

The 24-year-old Sweeney - who was born in Portland and attended school in Falmouth before moving to Suffield, Connecticut - started to lose control on Curve 9 of her fourth and final run of women's singles luge.

She initially put her feet down to slow her progress but quickly began to rock back and forth at more than 60 miles per hour.

While she lay unmoved on the ice for some time as her understandably anxious parents watched on, she was eventually cleared by medical staff and walked away.

"It's pretty brutal, but I wanted to get the last word".

Sweeney is in her first Olympics.

"I know I have a lot of support and I'm sorry that's how it ended". She narrowly missed a spot at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. A USA Luge official said she was taken to a clinic at the Olympic Village for evaluation.

"Curve 9 is extremely challenging, and the people that can [handle it] four times, will have the best shot at an Olympic medal".

The track was then reopened, with German star Natalie Geisenberger claiming the gold medal for the event.

Spectators and viewers expressed their concern via social media as many feared the USA athlete had hit her head and neck.

The Associated Press contributed to this reported.
