Mueller Looking At Whether Manafort Promised Lender A White House Gig

Special Counsel Robert Mueller filed a 32-count indictment Thursday hitting former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and aide Rick Gates with fresh charges of tax evasion and bank fraud. That indictment focused not on events in the 2016 race but financial transactions involving work by Manafort and Gates for a Ukrainian political party, and their failure to notify U.S. authorities that they were allegedly acting as lobbyists for a foreign government.

The special counsel investigating claims of Russian political meddling in the USA has filed new charges against two former aides to Donald Trump.

The new indictment accuses Manafort and Gates of doctoring documents to inflate the income of their businesses and then using those fraudulent documents to obtain loans. They also helped the Donald Trump campaign.

They were able to defraud banks because of the tens of millions of dollars they earned doing Ukrainian political work and lobbying from 2006 until 2015, the prosecutors allege.

The new indictment comes just a day after Alex Van Der Zwaan, a Dutch lawyer and son-in-law of a Russian oligarch, pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about communications regarding Ukraine with Gates.

The indictment unsealed on Thursday includes allegations of wrongdoing as recently as January 2017 and alleges that Manafort and Gates were desperate for cash when their lobbying business dried up, after pro-Kremlin Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich was forced to flee to Russian Federation after being ousted from power. Both Manafort and Gates have pleaded not guilty.

Both were charged in October with conspiracy to launder money.

Appeared in the February 22, 2018, print edition as 'Mueller Examines Manafort Loans'.

They pleaded not guilty to charges brought against them by Mr Mueller a year ago.

The new timeline flies in the face of White House officials' previous attempts to distance themselves from the allegations facing Manafort, which centered primarily on the fact that the illegal activity preceded Manafort joining Trump's campaign.

CNN previously reported that Gates has been in negotiations with Mueller's office for more than a month, and that Gates had spoken to prosecutors about his case since his indictment.
