Man who sold bullets to Vegas shooter charged

Man labeled 'person of interest' says he didn't detect anything wrong with Vegas shooter Person of interest who sold ammo to Stephen Paddock says the Las Vegas gunman raised no suspicion

A man who sold ammunition to Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock has been charged with conspiracy to manufacture and sell armour-piercing bullets without a licence.

The complaint filed Friday in federal court in Nevada says Haig didn't have a license to manufacture armor-piercing ammunition, which is required to manufacturer or sell such ammunition by US law.

Identified as Douglas Haig, local police said that his fingerprints were found on some of the unused bullets at the hotel room from where Paddock shot dead at least 58 people last October.

Court documents filed Friday indicated Haig also sold Paddock 720 rounds of tracer bullets.

During the news conference, Haig said he wanted people to know that he had nothing to do with Paddock, other than selling him legal ammo.

"At no time did I see anything suspicious or odd or any kind of a tell, anything that would set off an alarm", he said.

Haig was not aware of what happened in Las Vegas until agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the BATF told him 11 hours after the events unfolded. Haig advertised armor-piercing incendiary ammunition on his website, which now says the business is "closed indefinitely".

This evening, Haig, in shackles, appeared in federal court with Victor by his side on the single charge listed in the complaint, according to local ABC affiliate KNXV.

Federal officials declined or didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Haig's lawyer said in the press conference that his client does not talk to the press to protect his reputation.

Haig then put the ammunition in the box later found in Paddock's room.

Haig said he had received death threats after he was revealed as the seller.

One person of interest, whom police had named previously, was the killer's girlfriend, Marilou Danley. The judge later said her staff should have redacted the name. Had he used it, Howard said, even relatively low-quality cellphone video would have shown the very bright projectile trajectory.

"He said that he was going to go out to the desert and put a light show either with or for his friends", said Haig.

"This was a routine transaction to purchase a routine type of ammunition that is available in many different retail outlets throughout the state of Arizona", Victor said.

"I had no contribution to what Paddock did", Haig said. Now he's not sure he will ever get back into the business. "I had no way to see into his mind".

The complaint said Haig sold such bullets in more than 100 instances to customers across the United States, including Nevada, Texas, Virginia, Wyoming and SC. The product that I sold him had absolutely nothing to do with what he did. He says he is only a merchant and the government should not have released his name.
