Dog food recall: 4 companies pull products after deaths, illnesses

FDA & Wash. State Officials Investigate Pattern of Salmonella and Listeria Contamination In Raw Pet Food FDA, state investigate Darwin's pet food after illnesses, death

The Food and Drug Administration and the Washington State Department of Agriculture are investigating what FDA describes as a "pattern of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes contamination in raw pet foods manufactured by Arrow Reliance Inc".

Contaminated raw pet food is of particular importance because of the potential hazard to both human and animals, according to the FDA.

The issues involve Darwin's Natural and Zoo Logics pet foods, made by Arrow Reliance Inc. between October 17, 2016 and February 10, 2018. Pets do not have to be apparently ill to be able to pass Salmonella onto their human companions. There were instances of illness in connection with Raws for Paws, which pulled its 5-pound and 1-pound chubs of ground turkey pet food, and none for Smokehouse, which recalled 4-ounce bags of its Beefy Munchies dog treats. The UPC is #7 85184 25105 8.

Recalls were issued for Pet Food Combo Pack cases with the following codes: 9900008, 9900009, 9900014 and 9900015. The recalled pet food was sold in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin as well as online. 6 animal infestations were confirmed after consuming ZooLogics and Darwin's Natural pet food. Bully Sticks chews for dogs manufactured by Redbarn Pet Products (Long Beach, Calif.) were recalled after a sample tested positive for salmonella.

See the FDA website for additional details about recalled products. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The symptoms last up to a week and the majority of people recover without treatment, the FDA said. Pets don't always have symptoms, according to USA Today, but warning signs include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite and lethargy. Also pets that have consumed these products and are showing symptoms of a salmonella infection should be taken to the vet.

People can contract infections through contact with an infected pet, or by not thoroughly washing their hands after handling a contaminated product. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Pet owners who opt to feed their pets a raw diet should consult FDA's "Tips to Prevent Foodborne Illness from Raw Pet Food". Consumers who purchased this raw pet food should throw it away. Because animals can shed the bacteria when they have bowel movements, it's particularly important to clean up the animal's feces in yards or parks where people or other animals may become exposed.
