Democrats scramble on taxes as Republicans gain steam

People are defecting from the GOP. But not to the Democrats Will Mullery CNN

Democrat Margaret Good won the Florida House of Representatives District 72 special election on Tuesday, taking a seat that's always been in GOP control and capping a campaign that attracted national attention and stronger-than-average voter turnout.

In state House District 72, where Republicans have a 9-point registration advantage and Trump won in 2016, liberal Good got 52.2 percent to 44.8 percent for Republican James Buchanan, the son of U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Longboat Key. It has a margin of error of 2 percentage points. But 40 percent of the voters who cast ballots in the special election were Democrats. Libertarian candidate Alison Foxall received 3 percent.

Democrats knocked on thousands of doors and flooded the district with volunteers, money and big endorsements such as former Vice President Joe Biden.

What also makes the race notable is that Good remained competitive throughout, despite HD 72 having about 13,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats or unaffiliated voters - and has been reliable GOP territory for more than a decade.

Good's victory represented a almost 12-point swing from Trump's winning margin in the district. "This is a referendum on Trump and the GOP".

"I want to thank everyone who supported this campaign".

Gov. Rick Scott called the special election following the sudden resignation of former Rep. Alex Miller in September.

A seat that Democrats often wrote-off in previous elections suddenly turned competitive and the state party began picking up Good's campaign expenses.

Good's victory was the second special election upset for Democrats since Trump took office a little more than a year ago.

USA satisfaction hasn't been as high as it is today since November 2016, right before the presidential election, when Democrats' satisfaction soared.

The poll also reported that large majorities of voters have "serious concerns" about some of his advisers meeting with officials tied to the Kremlin at Trump Tower or Trump's interest in lifting sanctions against Russian Federation.

Although Democrats have the numbers and foundation to beat Johnson, some of the contests in Republican-leaning districts will be a struggle. To see this, first look at how much the Democratic candidate in the special election overperformed (or underperformed) Hillary Clinton. A plus on the GOP side is that Democrats are defending significantly more seats than the GOP in 2018. "So far in Republican House seats in these special (elections), that hasn't been the case".

Tom Eldon, Good's pollster and a longtime Florida Democratic operative who once lived in Sarasota, said the fact that Good was able to attract support from Republican and NPA voters in the northern Sarasota County state House district is not unusual.

"It was a red revolt", Anthony Pedicini, a GOP political consultant for Buchanan's campaign, told The News Service of Florida in a telephone interview Wednesday.
