Bomber sentenced to 2 life terms for Manhattan attack

Ahmad Khan Rahimi an Afghan-born U.S. citizen accused of planting bombs in New York and New Jersey appears in Union County Superior Court for a hearing in Elizabeth New Jersey NYC bomber Ahmed Rahimi sentenced to life in prison

A year earlier, in September 2016, Rahimi transported two improvised pressure-cooker bombs - similar to those used in the Boston marathon bombing in April 2013 - from New Jersey to NY, placing both in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, authorities said.

A New Jersey man who planted two bombs in the Chelsea section of Manhattan in September 2016 has been sentenced to life in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of NY announced on Tuesday.

Rahimi was arrested and charged after he planted two pressure cooker bombs in Chelsea on September 17, 2016, according to the complaint.

Judge Berman said Tuesday that Rahimi's defense provided "not an ounce of justification".

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill noted in a statement that Rahimi's sentencing should deter future acts of terror.

The first explosive threw a 100-pound dumpster more than 120 feet and sprayed hundreds of ball bearings and steel nuts that sliced through pedestrians' faces and legs.

The day after the Chelsea bombing, two men walking by the N.J. Transit station in Elizabeth found a knapsack containing more pipe bombs built by Rahimi.

Pauline Nelson, a mother of four who was driving near the bomb when it went off, shot Rahimi daggers as she railed against his courtroom demeanor.

Rahimi, known to many as the "Chelsea bomber", is a 30-year-old US citizen born in Afghanistan who grew up in New Jersey.

A second bomb forced the cancellation of a US Marine Corps run in the New Jersey town of Seaside Park.

Using fingerprints found inside the unexploded devices, authorities tied the Afghan-born US citizen to a series of bombings that injured 30 across the area. "It is not." Rahimi was convicted on October 16, 2017, following a two-week jury trial before U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman, who also imposed today's sentence.

"The Chelsea bombing was an attempt to bring our city to its knees". In an interview with WNBC, his father called him a terrorist.

Prosecutors said Rahimi gave inmates copies of terrorist propaganda and jihadist materials.

He placed another bomb several blocks away.
