Apple is now in the middle of a self-inflicted scandal after the company admitted that an iPhone software update was slowing down certain devices with older, weaker batteries.

iPhone X and iPhone 8 users don't have to worry about throttling practices, according to Apple.

Apple released iOS 11.3 public beta 2 on Wednesday, a day after releasing the second developer beta.

More than a year after its battery slowdown update, Apple has been besieged by a flood of lawsuits seeking class-action status, and government watchdog agencies in France, Italy and South Korea began probes into whether Apple engaged in planned obsolescence.

In a letter addressed to Senator John Thune (R-S.D.), Chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) said (PDF) it is exploring whether customers who paid full price for battery replacement should get a rebate for some of the purchase price.

The move came after a scandal erupted over Apple's practice of slowing down iPhones with older, weaker batteries - in the name of ensuring more reliable performance.

Apple said it introduced iPhone throttling in January 2017: In iOS 10.2.1 Readme notes, the company said it informed customers that the new update "improves power management ... to avoid unexpected shutdowns". The financial press has been ripe with stories of disappointing sales of the iPhone X, pending production cuts, and slowing growth.

Barclays analysts believe that the battery replacement program could affect iPhone sales and the average price of iPhones.

In response to the controversy surrounding Apple admitting that it slows down the processor speed of older iPhones when their batteries degrade to the point that they're no longer able to deliver peak performance, the company has added the ability for users to toggle throttling on and off. Models older than the iPhone 5S aren't affected by the same performance issue, it said.

Here's where things get a little more complicated. In India, the prices start at Rs 2000 for replacing battery. If you want to receive the beta you can sign up to receive them. For now, this update only applies to the iPhone SE, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, and 7 Plus.

"Additionally, users can see if the performance management feature that dynamically manages maximum performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns is on and can choose to turn it off".
