Apple Park Employees Keep Running Into Glass Walls

Apple got a painful reminder that design and safety aren't friends Apple's New Spaceship HQ Building Has Glass Walls So Clear Employees Are Taking Headers

Apple appears to have somewhat of an office problem as employees keep bumping their heads into the California headquarters' new glass walls. But employees only started moving in to "the spaceship" building this year.

The 13,000 or so employees who work in the building have to closely watch where they are going, Fortune reports. It officially opened to Apple employees earlier this year, supplanting the 1 Infinite Loop campus as the company's main seat of power.

Distracted employees keep walking into the panes. Some 12,000 Apple staff will eventually call Apple Park home.

Employees, including those injured, haven't spoken publicly about the incident as Apple maintains a tight non-disclosure policy. The building's design was crafted by famed architect Norman Foster, taking major cues from Apple co-founder Steve Job's vision for the new headquarters. One of the biggest design features contributing to Apple's aesthetics is the 45-foot tall curved transparent safety panels and the cubicles, walls, and doors all made of glass.

Obama jokes about 'big ears' in portrait
And their subjects make history once more, as the first black presidential spouses to be immortalized in the gallery. Another user defended the artist tweeting, "People are being so harsh on the artist of Michelle Obama's portrait".

Some of the staff have taken to sticking Post-It notes, or marking the glass as a literal heads-up.

Apple Park was designed by famed architect Norman Foster, based on a vision by late company co-founder Steve Jobs. As of now, the company has not fully migrated its employees to the new campus.

"While it is a technical marvel to make glass at this scale, that's not the achievement", Ive said in an interview with Wired Magazine. "The achievement is to make a building where so many people can connect and collaborate and walk and talk".

As someone who regularly runs into stuff, I can personally confirm that walls, not people are to blame in this situation, and likely the whole things is more a source of brief personal embarrassment for those involved. The construction team pushed back, but Apple held firm. Walking into clear glass at the Apple Store continues to be a hazard, warns our own Michael Steeber. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment, but a representative for the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration in Silicon Valley directed Bloomberg to its website to check on reports of injuries.
