Who Is Ronald Gasser? Joe McKnight's Killer Found Guilty Of Manslaughter

Andrew Cummings | 28 January, 2018, 00:17

Gasser faces a maximum of 40 years in prison.

Matt Goetz, Gasser's attorney, said McKnight chose to pursue his client.

The two reportedly began aggressively weaving through traffic before McKnight was followed off an exit by Gasser.

Prosecutors told jurors Friday that the evidence shows Gasser angrily pursued McKnight and shot him from inside his own auto.

The deadly confrontation between Gasser and McKnight, 28, occurred at a traffic intersection in the New Orleans suburb of Terrytown, where the two men stopped their vehicles after shouting vulgarities at each other and driving erratically for about 5 miles.

Gasser never disputed that he shot McKnight on December 1, 2016.

Physical evidence at the crime scene indicated that Gasser shot McKnight three times from his driver's seat as McKnight rested his left hand on Gasser's passenger-side window.

Shute cited the lack of gun powder on McKnight's body as evidence that McKnight had not been close to Gasser.

After six days of testimony in which the defence did not put forth a case, closing arguments started in a New Orleans courtroom today in the trial of Ronald Gasser. Jurors began deliberating about 12:30 p.m.

Shute acknowledged that McKnight had a hand on the open, passenger side window of Gasser's auto before he was shot.

Gasser shot McKnight after what prosecutors said was a road rage incident that included aggressive driving along a five mile route.

A top recruit in the class of 2007, McKnight rushed 347 times for 2,213 yards and 13 touchdowns, and caught 66 passes for 542 yards and 2 touchdowns in 3 seasons at USC.

McKnight's death caused an outpouring of grief from those who knew him best from his time at USC and in the National Football League with the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand, who has since retired, angrily denied that race played any role in the case and said a thorough investigation led to the arrest.
