It said Monday night that all airports were back on line.

Global travelers returning to the USA on New Year's Day faced massive frustration nationwide as the computer systems operated by Customs and Border Protection failed.

The outage is affecting other airports across the county, according to an official familiar with the situation.

Passengers who landed during those hours stood in long, snaking lines at the worldwide arrivals area, trying to get through passport control.

A spokesperson tells CBS News that Customs and Border Patrol has been contacted and are investigating.

A two-hour CBP systems outage hit various airports across the country, beginning at 4:30 p.m. PST. All airports are now back online.

CBP officers continued to process global passengers using alternative procedures, but the agency acknowledged that travelers at some ports of entry experienced longer than usual wait times.

Customs says that passengers continued to be processed during the outage, "using alternative procedures at affected airports".

"Everyone's running, they're flustered", Jason said. The case remain under investigation by Homeland Security Investigations special agents. "At this time, there is no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature", Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Jennifer Gabris said in the statement.
