Twitter will also notify 677,775 United States users about their interactions with accounts run by a Kremlin-linked troll farm called the Internet Research Agency.

In addition to them being taken down, Twitter also said it will send email notifications to 677,775 people in the US that interacted with any of these accounts either by following, retweeting or liking a post during the campaign.

The statement revealed that 677,775 people in the USA will be receiving an email from the company notifying them that they were followed, retweeted or liked, by accounts potentially connected to the Russian-linked organization referred to as the Internet Research Agency (IRA). Twitter suspended the accounts, some of which were run by humans, so it will not tell each user what tweets they interacted with.

In addition to other findings, Twitter said it discovered 13,512 accounts engaged in what it believed to be "automated, election-related activity originating out of Russian Federation", bringing the total number of such accounts to 50,258.

Twitter said it has been working to curb the ability of foreign actors to manipulate its platform following revelations of Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election.

Twitter added that much of this activity directly originated "out of Russian Federation", adding that it discovered "13,512 additional accounts" that tweeted election-related content during the election period.

Months after meeting with Congress about alleged Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election, Twitter has announced its latest findings. The platform said it found an additional 13,512 additional accounts. That group has been linked to the Russian government.

Twitter also identified another 13,500 automated accounts - for a total of 50,258 - that were linked to Russian Federation and tweeting out election-related material. Note, the accounts have already been suspended. The newly discovered accounts brings the total number of Russian bots to 50,258.

"We are aware of these reports and will take action on any accounts or Tweets that violate our terms of service", Twitter said in a statement distributed by Horne.

Despite the rise in Russia-backed accounts, Twitter insists the total lot accounts for just "two one-hundredths of a percent (0.016%) of the total accounts on Twitter at the time".

For the upcoming 2018 election, the company is verifying the Twitter accounts of all major party candidates for statewide and federal offices as a way to hinder account impersonation.
