The announcement came as U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron held a bilateral summit Thursday meant to strengthen security and intelligence ties between the neighboring nations, and to build goodwill as Britain negotiates its exit from the European Union.

Emmanuel Macron appeared on the BBC's Andrew Marr show on Sunday to discuss Brexit and his relationship with USA president Donald Trump.

Britain will also deploy helicopters to Mali to provide logistical support for French troops operating a counterterrorism mission.

Emmanuel Macron has said Britain can secure the bespoke Brexit trade deal Theresa May wants, but warned there would be a trade off.

The two leaders also confirmed that a Combined Joint Expeditionary Force, a unified British-French deployable military command, will be ready by 2020.

In the interview, to be broadcast on Sunday, the leader said the United Kingdom should not gain access to the single market without accepting its "preconditions", which include freedom of movement across the EU, budget contributions and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.

Macron says the border issue "is a common challenge and we shall succeed together".

"You can not, by definition, have full access to the single market if you don't tick the boxes".

"But there is not cherry picking in the single market. What is important is to not make people believe that it is possible to [have your cake and eat it]".

Essentially President Macron is looking for a negotiated Brexit deal that is in France's interest.

President Macron believes European Union interests are France's interests.

"If France had had a referendum it might have had the same result", suggested Marr.

Macron said he would "love" to welcome the United Kingdom back into the European Union and insisted the group of member states will become 27 "unhappily".

Mr Macron said access to the European Union for the UK's financial services sector was "not feasible" if the United Kingdom did not accept the obligations of the single market.

Britain agreed Thursday to pay 44.5 million pounds ($62 million) for fences, security cameras and other measures in Calais and nearby English Channel ports.

Mrs May praised the "uniquely close relationship" between the two nations.
