Rajesh Maru, 32, was accompanying an older relative to a scan at Nair Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday when a "ward boy" - a role roughly between porter and nursing assistant - allegedly asked him to take a metal oxygen cylinder into the MRI room.

"Last evening, the doctor told us to get the MRI done, following which Maru and two other family members approached the MRI room", Solanki said.

Staffers, according to the report, claimed that the knob on the oxygen tank broke open when Maru was sucked into the chamber on Saturday, causing the tank to leak. Dr Bharmal said that when the patient was brought to the MRI centre with an oxygen cylinder, the ward boy at the centre took the patient inside the room. His index finger which got stuck behind the cylinder was severed in the process.

Oxygen inside the cylinder is pressurised and in liquid form. As the Hindustan Times reports, the man was apparently told by a junior member of staff to carry a metal cylinder of liquid oxygen into a room containing an MRI machine.

Mr Solanki and the ward boys managed to pull him out of the machine but his body was swollen and he was bleeding heavily.

He said that the patient was not affected in the incident.

"One of my family members objected, saying the oxygen cylinder should not be allowed inside as it is metallic and can prove unsafe".

On being rushed to the trauma ward, he was given electric shocks, but the doctors failed to revive him. The state government of Maharashtra of which Mumbai is the capital agreed to give Maru's family a compensation of 500,000 rupees ($7,870).

Talking to this newspaper, the deceased's uncle Jaysingh Maru said, "As Laxmiben was on oxygen, the technician-cum-ward boy present inside the MRI ward, told him to carry the oxygen cylinder inside the MRI scan room due to which Maru died". What happened to Maru is a rare accident, as those who wish to enter an MRI room are first made to remove all objects that can be magnetised from their bodies.

A postmortem report said he died from excessive air entering his lung, according to the Indian Express.

The family members, locals and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA MP Lodha also staged a protest inside the hospital dean's cabin.
