RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav sentenced to 3.5 years in jail and Rs 5 lakh fine by Ranchi CBI court in a fodder scam case. The court also imposed Rs 5 Lakh fine on Lalu.

The hearing is to be held through video conferencing. Lalu's son said that he would approach the Patna high court for his father's bail. The Special CBI court had postponed the sentencing twice this week.

Lalu Prasad is also facing trial in three more cases relating to the fodder scam, known as "Chara Ghotala".

On Friday, the seasoned politician urged the court to give him minimum punishment, citing health issues.

Earlier in the day, Lalu's wife Rabri Devi has called an emergency meeting to decide the individual roles for party leaders in likely absence of the RJD chief.

According to legal experts, Lalu Prasad could apply for bail immediately at the lower court itself if the quantum of sentence happens to be less than three years. Lalu Prasad Yadav and 15 others were convicted in a fodder scam case 21 years after it had surfaced while acquitting six others including another former chief minister Jagannath Mishra.

The other transporters/suppliers punished were Sunil Kumar Sinha (three-and-a-half years in prison and Rs five lakh fine), Raja Ram Joshi (three-and-a-half years jail and Rs five lakh penalty), Gopinath Das (seven years jail and Rs ten lakh fine), Sanjay Agarwal (seven years jail and Rs ten lakh fine), Jyoti Kumar Jha (seven years jail and Rs ten lakh fine) and Sunil Gandhi (seven years jail and Rs ten lakh fine).

The RJD supremo is lodged in the Hotwar Central Jail in Ranchi since December 23. The 1997 fodder scam case had virtually brought down his political career.

There were 34 accused, out of which 11 died during the trial while one turned CBI approver and admitted to the crime.
