Apparently the Wiper Party leader was expected to take oath alongside Raila Odinga since the presidency is a joint business of the president and his deputy.

The national government refused to broadcast the event on television.

He withdrew from the repeat vote and strengthened his national resistance movement, which Interior minister Fred Matiang'i has now declared a criminal group. The move cleared the way for possible arrests.

Raila Odinga and his Nasarites followers crossed to Canaan as co-principals remained on the other side of river Jordan. The county government also announced the park was closed for renovations.

The function, characterised by jostling and pushing by a rowdy crowd at the Uhuru Park dais, was clearly not what supporters had expected.

"Kenyans have taken a step to free themselves from a dictatorial government that has been brought about by stealing elections", he said.

However, NASA CEO Norman Magaya remained defiant despite the heavy deployment of police to the park.

It came after months of political uncertainty and bloodshed.

After the incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta was declared victor of the presidential election, Odinga petitioned court contesting the results. The Supreme Court nullified Kenyatta's August win after Odinga challenged it claiming electoral fraud.

Almost 100 people were killed over the prolonged election period, mostly in clashes between Odinga supporters and police.

Many hoped Mr Kenyatta would reach out to his rival. Today we are willing to die. "We must give to Raila for courage", Prof Kiyiapi said in a tweet on Tuesday.

Going through with the shadow inauguration could exacerbate Kenya's current political crisis, with little real hope of seeing Kenyatta's being replaced.

Numerous protesters chanted pro-Odinga slogans, waved tree branches and blew horns and whistles. A group of men tore down a sign with Kenyatta's name.

Linus Kaikai, chairman of the Kenya Editors Guild, said on Monday that senior editors had been summoned by the authorities to not cover the event or risk being shut down. The live television feeds of several outlets went dead in the morning.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission then organized a second election, which Odinga boycotted, giving Kenyatta an easy victory. "Raila Amolo Odinga, President of the Republic of Kenya".
