'Error' Puts Hawaii on Alert Over Ballistic Missile Threat

Andrew Cummings | 14 January, 2018, 00:30

Emily Batty (Trek Factory), along with potentially thousands of residence and tourists on the island, were sent into a panic when they received a text message warning of an incoming ballistic missile while on a training ride in Hawaii on Saturday.

A frightening false alarm warning of a missile strike scared Hawaiians Saturday morning as cell phones across the state advised that the alert was "not a drill".

According to reports emerging on social media, some people even tried to seek shelter from the "incoming missile" in storm drains.

A spokeswoman for US Representative Tulsi Gabbard said she checked with the state agency that issued the alert and was told it was sent in error.

The Federal Communications Commission said on Saturday it was launching a "full investigation" into a false wireless emergency alert that a ballistic missile was headed for Hawaii, the chairman of the commission said.

Roughly a half hour later, another emergency notification was sent out, this time saying the first was a false alarm.

"But I think it's a very serious problem if it wasn't that, or even it was, it shows that we have problems in the system that can cause major disruption and panic and anxiety among people in Hawaii".

"NO missile threat to Hawaii", the agency tweeted.

Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency likewise confirmed that there was no threat, and that it was investigating the incident.

"At a time of heightened tensions, we need to make sure all information released to community is accurate", she wrote.

Honolulu's mayor, Kirk Caldwell, sends out a message on Twitter confirming that the alert had been sent in error.

White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters said President Trump had been briefed on the alert. "We have to get to the base of what happened and ensure it never happens again".
