Egypt will hold a presidential election on March 26-28, with a runoff in April, the chairman of the country's election commission said.

He ran in the 2012 elections but lost to the now-ousted president Mohamed Morsi who held office for just one year.

The independent NEC, established by a presidential decree in August 2017, is a 10-member commission and has sole responsibility for supervising general elections and referendums in Egypt.

The three-day run-off round will start on April 24 domestically and on April 19 for expatriates.

The results from the first round will be announced on April 2.

This will be Egypt's third election since the 2011 Arab Spring riots that overthrew the long rule of President Hosni Mubarak.

In November, Shafiq told Reuters that he intends to run for president in the upcoming presidential elections. Upon his arrival, Shafiq said that he had 'the chance to investigate more and see exactly what is needed' in Egypt prior to announcing his final stance.
