Rahul Gandhi at R Day Parade Rahul Gandhi Was Allotted Sixth Row At Republic Day Parade, Congress Party Angry On BJP

Congress sources said the party presidents, including Sonia Gandhi who handed over the party reins to Rahul Gandhi in December previous year, had always been seated in the front row at the Republic Day Parade. Rahul was seated near Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad.

The BJP Saturday slammed the Congress for kicking up an "unwarranted controversy" over its party chief Rahul Gandhi being given a sixth row seat at the Republic Day Parade and accused him of behaving like a "super VVIP".

Randeep Surjewala posted what he called a telling image of "petty politics" by the government. "Our party believes in value system as we not only follow the rules and traditions but we also ensure the greatest of respect for all our leaders and opposition leaders", Rao said. Recently, BJP spokesperson, GVL Narasimha Rao, stirred the controversy saying, "Rahul Gandhi did not deserve to be seated in the VVIP enclosure and honour was bestowed upon him in doing so".

Ron Wyden, he is "a ideal encapsulation of the president's broken promises on prescription drugs and health care overall". Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, had also cited his record as a pharmaceutical executive as the reason for his "no" vote.

Former prime ministers H D Deve Gowda and Manmohan Singh were seen seated in the front row in the picture, followed by Union ministers Smriti Irani and Thawarchand Gehlot.

It was his first Republic Day function as party chief after having taken over the post from his mother Sonia Gandhi in December a year ago. He said the BJP-led Central government had broken the convention under which the president of the Congress was given a front row seat. "For us celebrating the Republic is above all", he tweeted in Hindi. "We are only following the arrangement which was laid down and enforced under UPA", said Anil Baluni, convener of the party's media cell. When asked about Congress's charge that Rahul was shifted from the fourth row to sixth at the last minute, government sources said sometimes, such changes were required in the case of SPG protectees and no meaning should be read into it.
