AMD slapped with class-action suit over 'wrongful' handling of Spectre flaw

AMD slapped with class-action suit over 'wrongful' handling of Spectre flaw AMD slapped with class-action suit over 'wrongful' handling of Spectre flaw

Separately, technology website The Register reported, citing a document in Oracle's customers-only portal, that certain versions of Oracle Solaris on SPARCv9 are affected by one of the chip flaws, named Spectre, and the company was working on a security patch for it. Oracle declined to comment on the report.

The Meltdown vulnerability does not affect AMD's processors at all, but things get blurry as far as Spectre is concerned. The company acknowledges that it still has more work to do because while the patches have mitigated the exposure to security issues, some customers have complained about frequent reboots after the update.

Intel confirms that it has reproduced these issues internally and that it's making progress toward identifying the root cause. "In parallel, we will be providing beta microcode to vendors for validation by next week", Shenoy said.

The fallout from the Meltdown and Spectre flaws continues after Intel admitted problems with the patches created to fix the exploit.

While Intel says it has patched the exploits in 90 percent of the processors it has introduced in the last five years, it's clear there are still reliability issues affecting those processors.

Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities have thrown much of the technology sector into a panic, representing serious weaknesses that can be exploited by hackers to access sensitive information on users´ devices. As Intel admitted last week, some folks on Haswell and Broadwell CPUs are seeing spontaneous system restarts because of the updates.

But Oracle and many other vendors have yet to publish a full list of affected products or a timeline for when users can expect to see patches.

Patching: Performance ImpactTested: Server platforms running two-socket Intel Xeon Scalable systems (code-named Skylake), which is Intel's latest server microarchitecture.

Intel says workloads with more user/kernel privilege changes and which spend a lot of time in privileged mode are more adversely impacted.

Intel's blog post also has some preliminary data on the performance impact of the security fixes for datacenter systems.

Intel has also followed up its initial desktop performance metrics with benchmarks for data center.

The post highlights other mitigation options that have less of a performance impact, including Google's "Retpoline" security solution, which is said to have nearly no effect on a system's speed.
